Prayer Reflection

All Of Creation is a Symphony

Hildegard of Bingen, Prayer

Wisdom of the Mystics

All of creation is a symphony of joy and jubilation…

Prayer is nothing but the inhaling and exhaling of the one breath of the universe.

Saint Hildegard of Bingen

The longer you study the saints and mystics you will see an overarching theme return again and again.

We are all one.

Sit in contemplation near a tree and you will start to sense the aliveness that spills out from its roots and branches. The leaves tickle your shoulder as the wind breathes life into its stationary friend.

Gently cradle the head of your dog as you look into their eyes and you will be gifted a loving gaze in return.

Take the time for a conversation with a stranger and you realize you both grew up in the same town.

All of creation is a symphony of joy and jubilation…

I love the image of creation as a symphony. Many parts forming the whole of joy and jubilation. Trees, birds, animals, humans, the elements of wind, fire, water, earth all coming together in a joyous concert.

Prayer is nothing but the inhaling and exhaling of the one breath of the universe.

Boy can we complicate prayer. It is helpful to discuss different types of prayer, contemplative prayer, centering prayer, breath prayer, heart centered prayer, walking prayer. Praying in different ways can nuture and deepen our experience of the divine.

However, prayer is really just matching our breath with the oneness of the universe.

We sit, we breathe, we pray.

Or if you prefer, you walk, you stand, you run, you lie down.

You Pray

Life is complicated enough without complicating prayer.

Again, I teach and practice other “forms of prayer” but at the end of the day, it is you becoming one with the universe and its divine love.

God is love and however you sense the divine go with that.

For the mystic, God is everywhere and within.

The journey to that place of breathing the universe in and out is the work of a lifetime.

And it can take place now, in this moment.
