I was listening to one of my favorite folk bands, The Wailin’ Jennys recently.
Music is one of the central ways I feel connected to God, and the lyrics to the “Bird Song” suddenly brought me into a beautiful sacred place while I was driving one early morning.
I thought of St. Francis when he said, ”
“Praised be You, my Lord,
through Sister Earth our Mother
who sustains and governs us”
I listened with joy to the lyrics of this beautiful song, imagining the world through a bird’s eyes. The mystical wonder of God’s creation is alive as the singer enters fully into the “flowing river” and changing seasons.
Here are the lyrics and a video of a live performance of “Bird Song” by the Wailin’ Jennys. Enjoy and comment below where this song takes you!
I hear a bird chirping up in the skyI’d like to be free like that, spread my wings so highI see the river flowing, water running byI’d like to be that river, see what I might findI feel the wind a-blowing, slowly changing timeI’d like to be that wind, I’d swirl and shape the skyI smell the flowers blooming, opening for springI’d like to be those flowers, open to everythingI feel the seasons change: the leaves, the snow and sunI’d like to be those seasons, made up and undoneI taste the living earth, the seeds that grow withinI’d like to be that earth, a home where life beginsI see the moon a-rising, reaching into nightI’d like to be that moon, a knowing, glowing lightI know the silence as the world begins to wakeI’d like to be that silence as the morning breaks
