A Divine Love Song- Pearl Jam’s “Breathe”

Pearl Jam and the song Breathe

Today’s touch of God is from a piece of music by the band Pearl Jam.

My wife and I have a band we both love. She’s not a fan of all the music I play too loud in the house, but we both love Pearl Jam. The room suddenly gets quiet when Eddie Vedder’s rusty beautiful voice makes its entrance. It’s like hearing an old friend knocking at the door.

Familiar and happy to have them for a visit.

When I cook I like to listen to music streaming from my phone to my tiny Bose speaker which perfectly fills the kitchen space.

Music is so powerful spiritually as you can affect your way of being in profound ways.

From spiritual mountain top experiences listening to Hildegard von Bingen to soul lifting classical pieces such as Beethoven’s Ode to Joy from his Ninth Symphony.

I remember watching the “Even Flow” and “Alive” videos from my cold, lonely barracks at Ft. Wainwright in Alaska during my Army days. Those videos and Eddie Vedder’s voice left a lasting memory for me during those formative years.

Breathe” is probably my favorite Pearl Jam tune.

Eddie talked about the meaning of this song years ago and said this, ” It’s saying, ‘Just stop, and be together. Don’t talk now, just breathe and feel each other’s presence – now that the kids are in bed.'”

We can all relate.

That feeling at the end of the day with your loved ones when you can be thankful that you are all together.

The love fills the room and you can just breathe.

Below are the lyrics and you can probably see why it has spiritual significance in my life and may also in yours.

Breathe lyrics

Yes, I understand that every life must end, uh-huh
As we sit alone, I know someday we must go, uh-huh
Oh I’m a lucky man, to count on both hands the ones I love
Some folks just have one, yeah, others, they’ve got none

Stay with me…
Let’s just breathe…

Practiced are my sins, never gonna let me win, uh-huh
Under everything, just another human being, uh-huh
I don’t wanna hurt, there’s so much in this world to make me bleed

Stay with me
You’re all I see…

Did I say that I need you?
Did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t I’m a fool you see
No one knows this more than me

As I come clean…
I wonder every day, as I look upon your face, uh-huh
Everything you gave
And nothing you would take, oh no

Nothing you would take
Everything you gave…

Did I say that I need you?
Oh, did I say that I want you?
Oh, if I didn’t I’m a fool you see
No one knows this more than me
As I come clean, ah…

Nothing you would take
Everything you gave
Hold me ’til I die
Meet you on the other side…

Now its your turn!

Think about the music you listen to. What songs bring you to tears, uplift your spirit, bring back happy (or sad) memories of your life?

Sit with those songs.

Listen to them again or maybe go to Youtube and find some of the old videos you enjoyed watching when you were younger.

Visit my recent blog post on making your commute more enjoyable. Music is definitely a part of my drive each day!

Until next time,
